Research Interests
Juan is originally from Caracas, Venezuela. He is broadly interested in cross-dialectal patterns of variation in Spanish, and how learners come to acquire such patterns. Making use of both experimental and large-scale corpus data, his research appeals to statistical models for analysis and usage-based approaches for explanations. Juan’s recent work addresses questions related to word order, diminutive formation, and the expression of temporality in Spanish. He is also participating in collaborative projects on English-Spanish code-switching and morphosyntactic variation in Venezuela and Spain. As a teaching fellow, he has also taught and created materials and assessments for a variety of Spanish-language courses.
