Reflecting on the job market: Teaching-oriented positions

Farrah Neumann is a PhD candidate in Hispanic Linguistics and a Spanish teacher at Central Catholic High School. After teaching Spanish classes of all different levels at Pitt for the first five years of the PhD program, she began teaching at the high school level and found a passion for working with younger people and helping them find their own motivations for language learning. Farrah’s dissertation research focuses on second language speech sound learning and she is scheduled to defend later this month.

Dr. Silvia Pisabarro Sarrió is a Spanish Lecturer and the Coordinator of the Beginning and Intermediate Spanish Programs at the University of Rhode Island. She also serves as the Spanish placement specialist at URI, she is a member of the Proficiency committee, and has overhauled and revamped the entire curriculum of the beginning and intermediate levels she coordinates. She is a fully certified ACTFL OPI tester of Spanish as of July 2020. Prior to URI, she received her Ph.D. in Hispanic Linguistics at the University of Pittsburgh in 2019 with Matt Kanwit as her advisor. 

Dr. Virginia Terán obtained a PhD Degree in Hispanic Linguistics from the University of Pittsburgh in 2020 and since August 2019 she has held a Spanish Lecturer position in the Department of World Languages and Cultures at Georgia College & State University. In 2000, she obtained a BA Degree in Applied Linguistics & TESOL from Universidad Nacional de Tucumán, Argentina. Upon graduation and until 2012, she held a full-time Lecturer position in Introduction to English Grammar and English Syntax I at the same University.
