- Students are required to complete two (2) LING 1000-level elective courses. Electives may be chosen from among graduate courses if the six basic courses from the first two headings above have been completed.
Capstone course: choice of one of the following (3 credits):
- LING 1930 Applications of Linguistics
- LING 1903 Directed Research

Other requirements and rules for linguistics majors
- Majors must have at least a 2.0 quality point average in linguistics courses.
- No more than six credits may be taken on the S/N basis.
- Credit by examination is not available.
- LING 0080 Aspects of Language does not count toward the major.
- In addition to the language requirement for all A&S majors, students need to take one semester of language study in some language that is not Romance (including Latin), Germanic, Balto-Slavic, or Greek. (Note: Courses offered by the English Language Institute for students who are learning or improving their English language skills do not count toward the linguistics major.) Any students considering graduate work in linguistics, especially at the PhD level, also should consider taking French, German, or Russian.
- As a school of Arts and Sciences requirement, majors also must complete 12 credits of a minor, a related area, a certificate program, or another major. Besides language and foreign literature departments, the most appropriate related areas are anthropology, communication, computer science, English, history and philosophy of science, psychology, philosophy, sociology, and theatre arts.
- As an Arts and Sciences requirement, majors must complete one linguistics W-course. These courses are currently:
