Grants and Scholarships

While linguistics is the study of language itself, many of our students come to the discipline because they love to learn another language and explore a different culture. And while there are currently no scholarships at Pitt related to the study of linguistics, there are plenty of ways you can expand your language and cultural skills while studying abroad—and get financial support for doing so!

Incoming undergraduate and graduate students can view general financial aid information. But read on for other exciting ways you can acquire financial assistance.

Nationality Rooms Study Abroad Scholarships

The historic Nationality Rooms at the University of Pittsburgh offer study-abroad summer scholarships to undergraduates to learn languages like British Sign Language, and Swahili, to take classes on language and culture, and to volunteer with agencies abroad.

In 2016, 23 undergraduates received scholarships to study in Argentina, China, Lithuania, Peru, Ireland, Austria, India, Ecuador, Tanzania, the Czech Republic, France, Italy and Brazil—to name just a few of the countries and languages that Pitt students are interested in exploring.

Critical Language Scholarships (CLS)

The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program is a fully funded summer overseas language and cultural immersion program. Its goal is to broaden the base of Americans studying and mastering critical languages and building relationships between the people of the United States and other countries. Many of our students who focus on a foreign language study have received CLS scholarships over the years.

Summer Language Institute

The University of Pittsburgh’s Slavic, East European, and Near Eastern Summer Language Institute has offered intensive summer language courses for over 25 years. With a focus on critical and less commonly taught languages, Pitt’s SLI provides courses in Arabic, Bosnian /Croatian/ Serbian, Bulgarian, Czech, Hungarian, Persian (Farsi), Polish, Russian, Slovak, Turkish, and Ukrainian. Whether students choose to study on Pitt’s campus or on one of the SLI’s many abroad programs, they can expect to cover approximately one academic year’s worth of course work during a single summer.

The Summer Language Institute and related entities offer scholarships for the program.
