Degree Requirements for All MA Degrees in Linguistics

This page outlines the general requirements for these degrees.

The MA program requires a minimum of 10 courses (30 credits) chosen in consultation with the graduate adviser; in order to receive the degree, a student must maintain a grade point average of B (3.0 on a 4-point scale).

Entering students must take LING 1000 (formerly 1950) if they have not already taken an equivalent introductory course, but 1000 will not count toward the 30 credits required for the MA degree. In addition, five core courses are required:

Required Courses for all linguistics MA degrees

LING 2578 Phonetics; and,
LING 2579 Phonology; and,
LING 2777 Syntax; and,
LING 2144 Research Methods; and,

One course in sociolinguistics/language change, chosen from the following:

LING 2267 Sociolinguistics; or,
LING 2680 Historical Linguistics; or,
LING 2253 Language Contact.

 

Any courses required by the student's concentration.

The remaining courses are electives, of which six credits may be taken for thesis or long paper research.
