Research and Travel Funds

The linguistics department offers three types of grants to current graduate students:

Departmental Research Grant

This grant provides partial support for research that leads to a PhD dissertation, a COMP paper, or an MA thesis. Priority is given to applicants who have not been given departmental travel/research fund before. The maximum amount is $800 for research involving international travel or travel to Hawaii or Puerto Rico, and $400 for research that can be conducted within the continental US and Canada.

Deadlines: October 30, January 31, and April 1

Eligibility: Open to graduate students enrolled in Linguistics at the University of Pittsburgh.

Application materials should ALL be submitted online to the Director of Graduate Studies and should include:

  • Departmental Research Grant Proposal Form (MS Word)
  • A proposal (use the form above), addressing the topic of research, specific goals of the research, pre-research preparation, and other evidence that justify the use of fund. Please tell us if you have received this award before.
  • A brief note of support from the applicant's main academic advisor. Please remind your faculty advisor to submit the recommendation electronically to the Director of Graduate Studies.

Graduate Student Conference Participation Grant

This grant provides partial support for graduate students to travel to a professional conference and present a paper. Priority is given to applicants who have not been given departmental travel/research fund before. Also, priority is given to those who seek other sources of funding, such as Arts & Sciences GSO Travel grants (www.pitt.edu/~asgso/travel.html). Various area studies programs have their own travel grants as well. In your applications, state which other source(s) of funding for which you have applied (or plan to apply). The maximum amount is $800 for international travel or travel to Hawaii or Puerto Rico, and $400 for travel within the continental US and Canada.

Applications should be submitted BEFORE the conference takes place if at all possible, and the conference should be held in the same fiscal year (ending June 30).

Deadlines: October 30, January 31, and April 1

Eligibility: Open to graduate students enrolled in Linguistics at the University of Pittsburgh.

Application materials should all be submitted online to the Director of Graduate Studies and should include:

  • Student Conference Participation Grant Proposal Form (MS Word)
  • A proposal (use the form above) including: (a) the name of the conference you will attend, (b) paper title, panel title, and the abstract of the paper, (c) evidence of conference paper acceptance (if this is not available online, please give a photocopy to the Director of Graduate Studies).
