Graduate
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the deadline for applications?
The deadline
for graduate applications is December 15 for the following
academic year. If you wish to begin study in Fall 2009, the
deadline is December 15, 2008.
December 15 is the deadline for all applicants,
including international
students. The deadline for the School of Arts and Sciences is later,
but applicants for linguistics must have their applications to the
department by December 15.
What is the relative importance of disciplinary background, grade point average, GRE score, letters of recommendation, etc?
All of these factors are important, but a good score on one of them can compensate for a weak showing on some other factor. We do not issue cut-off scores, except for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), where a minimum of 550 is required (600 for those interested in a Teacher of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) certificate).
Do I really have to take the GRE?
Yes, the GRE is required.
What is the GRE reporting code for the University of PIttsburgh?
The GRE reporting code for Pitt is 2927.
When should I take the GRE?
You should take the GRE no later than November 1. Please keep in mind that you should register for the GRE weeks ahead of time because the examination rooms may be full before the registration date.
When will I hear what decision has been made about admission?
All applicants will be notified in late February, at the latest. Decisions on financial aid are not made before February.
Can I apply for the PhD program if I do not have an MA degree?
No. You can only apply for the PhD program if you already have an MA in linguistics. If your plan is to go on to the PhD program after you earn the MA, indicate that in your personal statement, but do not check the "PhD" box on the application. If you hold an MA in a related field, contact the admissions officer to find out for what you should apply.
What is the minimum GRE score for admission?
There is no cutoff score for admission. The GRE is one
piece of information we use in evaluating applications.
Some further remarks
Provide writing samples
Because your success in our program will depend on your writing skills, all applicants also must submit a sample of written academic work. Preferably this example will be on a linguistic topic, but it need not be. The writing sample should demonstrate your ability in academic prose and argument.
Answer all questions
Please answer ALL the questions on the application forms. Do give us a telephone number, even if you are applying from a foreign country. An e-mail address is especially useful.
