Colloquium: Dr Melinda Fricke, "Graduate Student Professional Development Workshop: How to Write an Abstract"

September 29, 2017 - 3:00pm to 4:30pm

Abstract

Across the academic world, abstracts are the common currency for quick and efficient transmission of knowledge, and often we assume that students will acquire good abstract writing skills simply through repeated exposure to the format.  While time and practice are certainly beneficial, in this workshop we will break down the components of a good abstract in a more systematic fashion, with plenty of practical tips, examples, and discussion.  We will also talk about some of the many purposes abstracts are used for, and will consider how the skills involved in writing a good abstract can be easily transferred to other areas, such as writing effective talks, papers, and grant applications.
