The linguistics department is home to the following three centers. Please visit the respective center pages to learn more about them.
English Language Institute
The English Language Institute (ELI) provides English-as-a-second-language courses for students who want to improve their English for academic, professional, or personal purposes. It offers an intensive, noncredit program in addition to credit courses for students enrolled in academic programs at the University and provides assessments of the English proficiency of international students at the University. ELI also is responsible for English language testing of University of Pittsburgh students who are not native speakers of English.
Less-Commonly-Taught Languages Center
The Less-Commonly-Taught Languages Center exists to broaden the range of options in foreign language instruction at the University of Pittsburgh. Courses are offered in more than a dozen languages that are pertinent to many programs of study but are not available in the University's other academic departments. The Less-Commonly-Taught Languages Center is also home to the Certificate in American Sign Language program.
Robert Henderson Language Media Center
The Robert Henderson Language Media Center supports the use of technology to enhance language learning. The center includes two computer labs, a recording studio, and a multimedia development area. The computer labs are used both for language classes and independent study.
